Following an off day on Wednesday, Derby will open up a four game series with the Haysville Aviators, frontrunners in the Jayhawk League South Division. The Twins will bring in a record of 12-14, 8-13 in league play after defeating Puerto Rico on Tuesday. After a slow start, Haysville has begun to heat up, improving their league record to 12-9, half a game up on the Wellington Heat. The four game series will rotate between Panther Field in Derby and Vulcan Field in Haysville, with each game slated for a 7:00 pm first pitch.
Shane Wise fired a complete game shutout, allowing no hits as the Derby Twins defeated the Puerto Rican Collegiate National Team 25-0 on Tuesday night. The right-hander struck out ten and walked four, allowing only three balls to reach the outfield.
Former Twins Pitcher Makes Big League Debut
Pat Venditte, the first ambidextrous pitcher in the modern MLB era, made his Major League debut with the Oakland Athletics on Friday night against the Boston Red Sox. Venditte pitched (with both arms) for the Wichita Twins in the summer of 2005 following his freshman year at Creighton, the Twins first season in the Jayhawk League. Initially drafted by the New York Yankees in the 20th round of the 2008 MLB Draft, Venditte toiled away in the minor leagues for the better part of seven seasons before being signed by the Athletics this past offseason. The switch-pitcher has yet to allow a run in his first three appearances.
